Finding a Provider
How the search works and what our verification means for you.
How do I search for a service provider on Skill Link?
▼
Use the search bar on the homepage. Type what you need, for example "plumber" or "graphic designer", and select your city. You can also browse by category directly from the homepage. Every result shows the provider's name, rating, city and starting price so you can compare at a glance before clicking any profile.
What does "Verified" mean on a provider's profile?
▼
A Verified badge means the provider's profile has been reviewed by the Skill Link team before going live. We check that their details are complete, their category is correct and their profile looks legitimate. It is not a background check. It means we have reviewed the listing, not that we personally vouch for the quality of their work. Reviews from real customers are the best guide to quality.
Can I filter providers by city?
▼
Yes. On every browse and category page you will see a district filter bar at the top. Select your district from any of Malawi's 28 districts to see providers near you. You can also type a city name directly in the search bar.
Why do some providers appear at the top of results?
▼
Results are sorted first by Featured status, then by rating. Featured providers are the first 50 people who registered on Skill Link - they earned permanent featured placement for joining early. After featured providers, higher-rated providers appear above lower-rated ones.
What if there are no providers in my city for the service I need?
▼
If no providers are listed in your city for a specific service, the page will show providers from other cities who may still be able to help. Some providers travel or work remotely. You can also browse the full category to see everyone across Malawi. If you still cannot find what you need, contact us and we will try to help.
How are star ratings calculated?
▼
Each provider's star rating is the average of all approved reviews they have received. Ratings range from 1 to 5 stars. The number in brackets shows how many reviews that average is based on. A provider with ★ 4.8 (23 reviews) is more reliable than one with ★ 5.0 (1 review). Reviews can only be left by buyers who have actually contacted the provider via WhatsApp on the platform.
Pricing & Payments
How pricing works on the platform and how payments are handled.
How much does it cost to use Skill Link as a buyer?
▼
Completely free. Creating a buyer account, browsing providers, reading reviews and contacting providers via WhatsApp costs you nothing. Skill Link does not charge buyers any fees at all.
Does Skill Link take a commission from jobs?
▼
No. Unlike other platforms, Skill Link charges zero commission. When you hire a provider and pay them for their work, every kwacha goes directly to the provider. Skill Link earns only from the monthly listing fee that providers pay, not from your transactions.
How do I pay the provider for their work?
▼
You pay the provider directly: cash, mobile money or however you both agree. Skill Link does not process payments between buyers and providers. The platform connects you; the payment happens between you and the provider privately. Always agree on the price and payment method before work begins.
Why do providers show a "starting price" rather than a fixed price?
▼
Most service work in Malawi cannot be priced exactly without knowing the details of the job. A plumber's rate depends on what needs fixing and a tailor's rate depends on the design and fabric. The starting price gives you a realistic floor so you know roughly what to expect. Contact the provider via WhatsApp to get an accurate quote for your specific job.
Is it safe to pay a provider before they do the work?
▼
Skill Link recommends not paying the full amount upfront for large jobs. A reasonable deposit is normal practice. Pay the balance only when you are satisfied with the work. Read reviews carefully before hiring. Providers with many positive reviews are far less likely to disappoint.
Contacting Providers
Why we use WhatsApp and what to expect after you reach out.
Why does Skill Link use WhatsApp instead of an on-site messaging system?
▼
WhatsApp is how most Malawians already communicate for business. Every provider on the platform has WhatsApp, most buyers do too, and conversations happen naturally and quickly. An on-site messaging system would add a step that most people in Malawi do not need. Direct WhatsApp contact means faster responses, easier photo sharing for quotes, and a conversation that continues naturally even after the job is done.
Do I need to register to contact a provider?
▼
Yes, you need a free buyer account to see the provider's WhatsApp number. Registration takes under two minutes and is completely free. This requirement protects providers from spam and means every contact they receive is from someone who chose to register, which improves the quality of enquiries.
What should I say when I first WhatsApp a provider?
▼
Be specific: describe what you need, your location and roughly when you need it done. For example: "Hi, I found you on Skill Link. I need a plumber in Ndirande to fix a burst pipe. Are you available this week?" A clear first message gets a faster, more useful response than a vague "hello".
What if a provider does not respond to my WhatsApp message?
▼
Give it a few hours. Providers are often on a job. If there is no response within 24 hours, try calling the number directly. If you still get no response, browse other providers in the same category. You can also leave a review noting the lack of response, which helps other buyers.
Can I contact multiple providers at once?
▼
Yes, and for larger jobs we recommend it. Contact two or three providers, describe your job, and compare their quotes and response quality. Skill Link makes this easy because all providers in a category are listed in one place with their WhatsApp numbers directly accessible.
For Sellers
How to list your services, what the subscription covers and how featured status works.
How do I list my services on Skill Link?
▼
Click "Join Free" at the top of the page, select Provider when asked for your role, and fill in your profile: category, city, WhatsApp number, bio, experience and starting price. Upload a profile photo. Your profile will be reviewed and activated once your first subscription payment is confirmed.
How much does a provider subscription cost?
▼
MK15,000 per month. This is a flat listing fee with no commission on any job you do. You keep every kwacha you earn. If you joined via a referral link, your first month is MK10,000.
What happens to my profile if my subscription expires?
▼
Your profile is hidden from buyers and removed from all search results the moment your subscription lapses. You will not lose your account or reviews. Everything is saved. Renew your subscription and your profile is restored immediately. You receive email reminders 7 days, 3 days and on the day your subscription expires.
What is Featured status and how do I get it?
▼
The first 50 providers to register on Skill Link receive permanent Featured status. Featured providers appear at the top of search results and on the homepage's Featured Providers section, always regardless of rating. This is a one-time reward for early adopters and cannot be purchased. If you are not in the first 50, your profile still ranks by rating among non-featured providers.
How does the referral programme work?
▼
Every provider gets a unique referral link in their dashboard under Refer & Earn. Share your link with other people who offer services. When someone registers as a seller through your link and makes their first payment, you instantly receive one free week added to your subscription. There is no cap. Refer 52 people and earn a full year free. The person you refer also benefits: their first month costs MK10,000 instead of MK15,000.
Can I update my profile after registering?
▼
Yes, log into your dashboard at any time to update your bio, tagline, starting price, profile photo, portfolio photos and availability status. Changes go live immediately. Keeping your profile complete and up to date improves your ranking in search results.
How do I collect reviews from my customers?
▼
Skill Link has a built-in review request system. In your dashboard, enter the WhatsApp number of a customer you have recently worked with and the system generates a unique review link. You send it to the customer via WhatsApp with one tap. The customer clicks the link, gives a star rating and writes a short comment. No login required for them. Reviews are published within 30 minutes once they pass our automated checks.
Do I receive any reports about my profile performance?
▼
Yes, every active seller receives a personalised weekly performance report by email every Monday morning. It covers your profile views for the week, WhatsApp contact clicks, your overall star rating and review count, any new reviews, and your ranking within your category. You also receive a personalised tip based on your actual numbers.
Trust & Safety
How reviews work, what we do about bad actors and how to stay safe.
Are the reviews on Skill Link real?
▼
Yes, reviews are protected by several layers. First, only registered buyers can leave a review. Second, they must have clicked the WhatsApp button on that provider's profile. Third, they must wait 24 hours after that contact before the review form appears. Fourth, every review passes automated content checks before going live. These rules make it very difficult to leave fake reviews.
What if I have a bad experience with a provider?
▼
Leave an honest review. This is the most important thing you can do. Your review warns other buyers and gives the provider a chance to respond publicly. If the issue is serious, contact us via the contact page and describe what happened. We take reports of fraud, no-shows and misleading profiles seriously and will investigate.
Can providers delete bad reviews?
▼
No. Providers cannot delete, hide or edit reviews left about them. They can post one public reply to each review, but the original review stays. Only Skill Link administrators can remove a review, and only if it violates our content rules such as abusive language or spam.
What should I do if a provider asks for full payment before starting work?
▼
Be cautious. It is normal for providers to ask for a deposit, typically 30 to 50 percent upfront for materials or to hold your booking. Paying the full amount before any work is done is a risk. Check their reviews carefully. If a provider has no reviews and is asking for full payment upfront, proceed with extra caution or choose a provider with a proven track record.
How do I report a provider for fraud or misconduct?
▼
Use the contact page to report any provider. Include the provider's name and profile link, a description of what happened, and any evidence you have such as screenshots of WhatsApp conversations. We will investigate and take action, up to and including permanent removal from the platform.
Is my personal information safe on Skill Link?
▼
Yes. We do not sell your data to third parties, we do not show advertisers your personal information, and we do not share your contact details with providers. Your email address, password and account details are stored securely and never shared. Read our Privacy Policy for full details.
